Our community within Brantford

Eagle Place is situated in the south end of Brantford above the Grand River. In fact, the neighbourhood was once called Eagles’ Nest because of the presence of eagle nests along the river. It was the industrial centre of Brantford, home to many large factories like Massey Ferguson and Cockshutt Plow. These large sites now exist only in history books and people’s memories. Abandoned buildings and brownfield sites are all that remain in Eagle Place of that thriving economy. The Brantford Charity Casino was recently opened at the uppermost edge of Eagle Place and has provided lots of employment although its effects socially have yet to be measured in terms of the problems of gambling and criminal activity that many residents are anticipating.

This is a residential area made up of some older stately residences, large areas of smaller war-time housing as well as attractive middle class homes. Many seniors live in Eagle Place, side by side with a large native population and many young families with some on assistance. Quite an interesting mixture.

We have a rich native heritage in Eagle Place. Recently a reconstruction of a 17th Century Iroquoian village – Kanata – was opened. Just across the street from the village is Her Majesty’s Chapel of the Mohawks – the oldest protestant church in Ontario and the only Royal Chapel in Canada. Built in 1785, it features stained glass windows commemorating events in native history, many unique artifacts and the burial place of Captain Joseph Brant, for whom Brantford is named. Eagle Place was also the location of the Mohawk Institute, a native residential school.
